In the second virtue, there is first a question, next a discrimination, and then an overall conclusion. Within the discrimination, the five superknowledges are proclaimed as its essence, the meaning of which is as in the separate chapter; here they should be fully discussed. In the text, first the chapter headings are opened and listed: "Attaining what was not attained in the past and now attaining it" is the supernatural power of transformation within the bodily superknowledge, which ordinary people and the two vehicles cannot attain, but the bodhisattva attains; the rest are all like this. "Seeing without seeing" is the divine eye superknowledge; "hearing without hearing" is the divine ear superknowledge; "reaching without reaching" is the supernatural power of flight within the bodily superknowledge. Other people cannot reach the distant places of the ten directions, but the bodhisattva can reach them; this and the first section are both bodily superknowledge. Why are they not in one place, but separately listed here? It is in order to display the difference in functions within the body. "Knowing what was not known and now knowing it" refers to the other two superknowledges of the minds of others and past lives.
