In the first part, it first explains the meaning of nirvāṇa, first questioning, next explaining, and afterwards generally concluding. Within the explanation, it first clarifies the eight meanings of nirvāṇa to know how the Mahāyāna differs from the Hīnayāna: the initial question, subsequent explanation, and final conclusion can be understood. The latter eight and six are to know how the Hīnayāna differs from the Mahāyāna, within which there are four points: first, it brings up the eight items of the ordinary person's nirvāṇa; second, it enumerates the six items of the Hīnayāna nirvāṇa—it should fully have eight, but impermanence and non-self are briefly omitted; third, from "There are ordinary..." onward, it explains the ordinary person's nirvāṇa: first brought up, next explained, and then concluded, as can be understood; fourth, from "How is it..." onward, it explains the Hīnayāna nirvāṇa, first questioning and then explaining. Previously impermanence was concealed, but within the explanation it is present. From "If it is like this..." onward concludes the preceding as different from the succeeding, called "knowing that nirvāṇa is not buddha-nature" and so forth.
