In the second phrase: "Nirvāṇa is precisely constancy, bliss, self, and purity" distinguishes existence to differentiate it from emptiness. Why must it be distinguished? Earlier it was said that space is without self, bliss, or purity, and now it is said that nirvāṇa is also like space; fearing that worldly people might take that nirvāṇa to be entirely identical to space, without self, bliss, or purity, it must therefore be distinguished. How is it distinguished? Emptiness is the absence of principle, lacking self, bliss, and purity; because the substance of the fruitional virtues of nirvāṇa is existent, it is fully endowed with the four meanings; therefore it is said that nirvāṇa is precisely constancy, bliss, self, and purity.
