King of Virtuous Power asks first; in the questioning, it is first specific, and then concludes with a general reprimand. In the specific parts there are five, grouped into three: addressing Māra at the Nairañjanā River is the first sentence; the bodhisattvas having already severed [defilements] is the second sentence; formerly addressing Jātismara is the third sentence; addressing Māra at Vaiśālī is the fourth sentence; speaking to the Mallas about entering nirvāṇa in the final watch of the night is the fifth sentence. In grouping them into three: the first two sentences cling to that place where body and wisdom are extinguished and exhausted as nirvāṇa, raising objections to refute that the place where defilements are severed is it; the third sentence clings to the body and wisdom at the place where delusions are severed being precisely nirvāṇa, raising an objection to refute the earlier [statement that] nirvāṇa is like space, having no dwelling place; the latter two sentences return to clinging to the extinction of body and wisdom as nirvāṇa, raising objections to refute that the place where defilements are severed is it.
