Question: King of Virtue previously raised five challenges, and above three were answered; why are the third and fifth not explained? Answer: When the second and fourth challenges were answered above, the remaining two could be understood; for this reason they are not answered. How can they be understood? In the Tathāgata's reply to the fourth challenge, his stating that for the sake of the Mallas he told the Māra he would enter extinction is similar to his statement in the fifth that he told the Mallas he would enter extinction in the latter part of the night; what need is there to answer it further? Moreover, in answering the second challenge above, he clarified that the severance of afflictions is sometimes called nirvāṇa and sometimes called great nirvāṇa; in the third clause, the challenge to refute the locus of severance of afflictions as incorrect has already had its meaning made apparent; what need is there to explain it further? Therefore, there is no separate reply.
