second, listing the five names, this meaning being explained as in the chapter on the ten fetters. First, "personality view" is also called the view of self; grasping the body as a self, it is named personality view according to what is grasped. Positing the body as a self, it is called the view of self according to what is established. As for "extreme view," because it deviates from the middle into annihilationism or eternalism, it is described as extreme. Slandering the absence of cause and effect and defying the principle of phenomena, it is named "wrong view." As for "clinging to rules and observances," it is also called the view of purity; grasping dharmas such as precepts to be the true path, it is named clinging to rules and observances according to what is adhered to. Grasping them as true purity, it is named the view of purity according to what is established. Now, according to what is adhered to, it is called clinging to rules and observances; however, this does not merely grasp precepts as the path, but also grasps wholesome acts such as generosity and bowing as the true path; since those who grasp precepts are the majority, it is merely named clinging to rules and observances; hence the Za xin says: "This should properly be named 'clinging to rules and the like.' The sūtra abbreviates 'and the like,' merely stating 'clinging to rules.'" As for "clinging to views," grasping various views and the like to be correct and supreme, it is therefore called clinging to views. However, this does not merely attach to various views, but also grasps Brahmā, Īśvara, and the like to be supreme; regarding supramundane dharmas, those who grasp views are the majority, so it is provisionally called clinging to views; hence the Za xin says: "This too should properly be named 'clinging to views and the like.' The sūtra abbreviates 'and the like,' merely stating 'clinging to views.'"
