From "Just as sentient beings" onward is the fifth point, which adduces nonexistence to reveal existence—adducing the nonexistence of a spiritual self to reveal the existence of greed. "Just as beings lack a self, yet ordinary persons falsely calculate it and do not fall into the three evil [realms]" is adducing nonexistence. From "Why does one who is greedy toward what is not a woman" onward reveals existence. What is the meaning of this? Because there is no spiritual self in the bodies of sentient beings, though ordinary persons falsely calculate a self therein, they do not fall into the three evil [realms]. If the fetter of greed were the same as the self—actually lacking any agent who gives rise to greed—it should also be the same as the former and not fall into the three evil [realms]; why then does one who is greedy fall into the three evil paths? That one who is greedy falls into the evil [paths] clarifies that greed exists, unlike the self's nonexistence. Such is the meaning of the words. However, the treatises explain the calculator of a self differently: according to the *Tattvasiddhi*, one also falls into the evil paths; the *Abhidharma* proclaims that the two views of individuality and extremes are morally neutral, and therefore one does not fall into the three evil [realms]. What is stated here is identical in meaning with that *Abhidharma*. The *Bodhisattvabhūmi* is also like this; hence the *Bodhisattvabhūmi* states: "A person who gives rise to the view of individuality does not slander what is known, and does not fall into the evil paths on account of this view," which is directly identical with this. As for the words "in what is not a woman gives rise to the conception of a woman": a painted image is not a woman, yet worldly people see it and give rise to the conception of a woman. Why does it not cite giving rise to greed toward a woman and falling into the three evil paths, but specifically cites this? It is to reveal that falling into the evil [paths] stems solely from the nature of greed present in the mind, and does not arise from the object.
