Third, speaking in terms of essence, although this buddha-nature is named empty, its essence is the true mind; the mind is the nature of awakening, hence it is named wisdom. Therefore the Avataṃsaka says, "Within the fine dust of the minds of all sentient beings, there is unmastered wisdom, unobstructed wisdom, vast wisdom," and so forth; in Aśvaghoṣa's treatise it is spoken of as original awakening. Question: At the time of an ordinary being, there is not yet wisdom or understanding; by what meaning does it obtain the name of awakening? The treatise itself explains: "Because from the beginning it has the meaning of the light of great wisdom, because it has the meaning of universally illuminating all the dharmadhātu, and because it has the meaning of naturally pure conscious knowing, it is named awakening." What is the meaning of this? Within the essence of the true mind, all buddha-dharmas exceeding the sands of the Ganges are fully present; the mind illuminates those dharmas with an identical essence, having been unobstructed from the beginning; this is called illuminating the dharmadhātu, and hence it is named wisdom.
