Second, the simile of the māras deluding ordinary beings. "The places where both man and monkey can go" repeats the third [item] from before. "The hunter places pitch upon the block" means placing the pitch of the five desires upon the block of humans and devas. "To catch monkeys" means using it to delude ordinary beings. Question: The five desires are the karmic fruits of sentient beings; what do they have to do with the affairs of Māra? It says that Māra places desires upon the block of humans and devas—this is not all-inclusive; here it merely adduces what Māra performs, such as when Māra brought [his] daughters to seduce Dharaṇīṃdhara and others.
