Regarding 'tranquillity': it first raises the number two, listing the names 'body and mind'. Below it explains their characteristics: first distinguishing them according to the intrinsic Dharma through two gates, and below distinguishing them according to differences among persons through four gates. In the explanation according to the intrinsic Dharma, it is interpreted in two senses: First, distinguishing them in terms of the two evils of body and mind. Leaving behind the three physical evils is called 'bodily tranquillity'; killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct are the three physical evils. Leaving behind the three mental evils is called 'mental tranquillity'; greed, hatred, and wrong views are the three mental evils. Second, distinguishing them in terms of the beginning and end of the arising of afflictions. 'Bodily tranquillity' means not approaching the four assemblies and not participating in the undertakings engaged in by the four assemblies, thereby separating from the conditions for afflictions. 'Mental tranquillity' means not accumulating greed and so forth, thereby separating from the substance of afflictions. In the differentiation according to persons, four gates are opened, and the explanation below can be understood.
