From here below, the second teaches how to see the buddha-nature, within which there are three parts: first, teaching how to see the nature; second, from "Although a precept-upholding monk does not wish..." onward, explaining that the cultivated practices are capable of giving rise to one another; third, from "Siṃha said: If relying on upholding precepts one attains non-regret..." onward, questions, answers, and analytical discrimination. In the first part, the practices specifically have fourteen stages, starting from upholding precepts up to seeing the nature. In precepts, gains and losses are manifested in contrast to each other, having five pairs in total: First, differentiation by purpose: first stating, next listing, and below showing gain and loss: "Upholding precepts for profit does not see the buddha-nature or the Tathāgata"; for the sake of the Dharma, one is able to see. Second, differentiation by shallow and deep: first stating, next listing, and below distinguishing their characteristics. Third, differentiation according to whether it is for oneself or for others: first stating, next listing, and below showing gain and loss. Fourth, contrasting self-upholding and being taught by others: first stating, next listing, and below distinguishing their characteristics. Fifth, differentiation by great and small: first stating, next listing, below distinguishing their characteristics, and finally showing gain and loss: receiving the śrāvaka precepts does not see the buddha-nature or the Tathāgata; receiving the bodhisattva precepts enables one to see them.
