In the fifth clause, the text is deficient and incomplete. If complete, it should say: "If there is a buddha-nature, why then say 'is an avivartika'?" Regarding *avivartika*: *vivarta* means retrogression; *avivarta* means non-retrogression. If the buddha-nature is permanently abiding, how could there be the sense of retrogression or non-retrogression? If one retrogresses, one should know there is no nature; he proves non-existence by means of retrogression.
