Below, the Buddha answers it: first he grants permission to speak, and afterward properly resolves it for him. Among the previous three objections, he only resolves the last one to clarify that there is bondage; from "if one attains intimacy..." and below, he clarifies that there is liberation. Within bondage there are three parts: first, from the present arises the intermediate; second, from "names are not different" and below, from the intermediate arises birth; third, from "when being born, whether the sense faculties are complete or incomplete" and below, from birth arises bondage. In the first, he first explains the marks of death in the present aggregates; the doctrine, metaphor, and application are clear in the text. Below, he explains the marks of the intermediate aggregates arising from the present: first the doctrine, next the metaphor. In the metaphor there are two: first, adducing the lighting of a lamp and the extinguishing of darkness as a metaphor; second, adducing a seal imprinting clay as a metaphor. The seal metaphor has four [parts]: first, "a seal imprints clay, and the seal unites with the clay" illustrates the metaphor of the intermediate arising from the present; second, from "when the seal is extinguished..." below, is the metaphor of the present perishing and the intermediate being completed; third, from "yet this..." below, is the metaphor of the former not reaching the latter; fourth, from "the text is not..." below, is the metaphor of the latter relying on the former to arise. Below, the application reveals the doctrine. Regarding the seal metaphor, it only applies the latter three: the present perishing and the intermediate arising applies to the second clause; from "this present..." below applies to the third clause; from "the five aggregates of the intermediate existence are also not of themselves..." below applies to the fourth clause. From "like a seal imprints..." below adduces the metaphor to match, but only takes up the second.
