Below, the Buddha answers him. What is the meaning of the answer? It reveals that those [elements of] name-and-form gather together to form sentient beings, and there are none outside of sentient beings; hence it is said that they are "identical." The nominal and the real mutually bind; it is not that the real binds the real, and therefore one cannot proclaim that name-and-form turns around and binds name-and-form. In the text, first he responds directly with respect to bondage: first an analogy, next an application, and finally a conclusion, which is clear. From "if one departs" onward, he responds with respect to liberation. Precisely because sentient beings and dharmas have no separate substance, being far removed from name-and-form is immediately called the liberation of sentient beings. From "therefore" onward is the conclusion.
