In the fourth section, based on the preceding analogy, he further establishes a different dharma to match the lamp analogy. "Listen attentively to what I say" enjoins him to listen and promises to speak. Below, he directly applies it, applying it to reveal the dharma. The "wick" is an analogy for the body of the twenty-five states of existence. The "oil" is an analogy for the fetters of craving. The "light" is an analogy for wisdom. "Dispelling darkness" is an analogy for eliminating ignorance. The "warmth" is an analogy for the noble path. "Just as when the oil of a lamp is exhausted, the light and flame are extinguished" restates and cites the analogy. "Sentient beings' craving being exhausted" matches the exhaustion of the oil. "Its light being extinguished" is an analogy for wisdom being extinguished. "Its flame being extinguished" is an analogy for the fruit of their birth-and-death of transformation being extinguished. Because these are extinguished, one realizes and sees the buddha-nature. Because one sees the buddha-nature, although there is the name-and-form of the true dharmakāya, it cannot bind; it is also that the name-and-form of manifestation and transformation does not bind. Because it does not bind, although presently in the twenty-five states of existence, one is not defiled by them.
