Regarding the power of faculties, the text is divided into three parts: first, knowing the severance of the roots of goodness; second, from "The Tathāgata is fully endowed with the power of knowing faculties" onward, knowing the arising of the roots of goodness; third, from "The Buddha observes that sentient beings are endowed with wholesome dharmas" onward, comprehensively knowing both arising and severance. In the first part, knowing severance, five questions and answers arise in succession. Kāśyapa first asks by what cause an icchantika has no wholesome dharmas; the Buddha answers that because an icchantika severs good, he has none. "An icchantika severs good" is the general answer; "Sentient beings all possess the five faculties such as faith, but an icchantika severs them forever" is the specific answer. From "By this meaning..." onward, he reveals their absence by reference to killing.
