From here below is the third [section], adducing categories with reference to persons. Therein, it first adduces categories with reference to five kinds of bad people; "Therefore I previously told Śāri[putra]..." and below adduces categories with reference to the two kinds of persons, sharp and dull. Within the former there are three parts: First, citing past statements to explain that for five kinds of sentient beings one should not in turn speak of five kinds of dharmas. Question: The sūtra states that one should teach stingy sentient beings to practice giving, and up to teaching foolish ones to cultivate wisdom; why is it that now, in front of faithless people, one does not praise correct faith, and up to not praising wisdom in front of foolish ones? Explanation: It is because it varies according to the person. If a person internally possesses the capacity for the supramundane path and is disgusted with their own faults, then one must speak the antidote to counter the illness—speaking of giving for stinginess, and up to speaking of wisdom for the foolish. If they lack the capacity for the path and are not disgusted with their own faults, then one must protect them, not praising correct faith in front of faithless people, and up to not praising wisdom in front of the foolish. Second, "Why?" and below explains the reason why one must not speak [these things] as mentioned above: if one speaks them, it is not called knowing faculties and pitying sentient beings. Third, "Why?" and below explains the preceding [point of] not being called pitying sentient beings and knowing faculties: when these people hear the teaching they give rise to unwholesomeness and undergo suffering, and therefore it is not called pitying sentient beings and knowing faculties.
