Below, within the two question-and-answer exchanges explaining how doubt and attachment sever the roots of good, the first question and answer brings forth the person of doubt and attachment. "Who is it?" is the question; "The one who severs the [roots of] good" is the answer. The latter question and answer directly clarifies the severing of the roots of good. "World-Honoured One! What sort of person is able to sever the roots of good?" asks the question based on what came before. Below, the Buddha answers. First, a brief answer; from "Apart from these four" onward, there is an extensive answer following specific details. From "If one has deep views of neither cause nor fruit" onward, it concludes as a whole. In the brief [answer], it clarifies overall that "clever, intelligent, of sharp faculties, and skillfully able to distinguish" distinguishes the sharp from the dull; "keeping distant from friends," and so on, distinguishes the bad from the good. It is precisely because one cannot draw near to friends, hear the Dharma, and cultivate correct reflection that one severs the roots of good. "Such a one is able to sever" concludes as a whole.
