Next, it clarifies the meaning of production and non-production, first with a question and then an answer. The military analogy lacks the dharma. Next, it refutes definite existence and non-existence with reference to milk and curd. Therein, first it directly refutes definite existence and non-existence with reference to milk and curd, and afterwards reveals the existence and non-existence of curd with reference to the four conditions producing the eye-consciousness and so forth. In the former, there is first a question; afterwards the Buddha answers it, first distinguishing the features of the analogy, and afterwards revealing the nature in reference to it. In the analogy there are four [parts]: first, direct refutation according to its features; second, interrogative refutation based on the sequence of mutual production; third, refutation by adducing the category of cause; fourth, refutation by adducing the category of fruit. In the first there are two: first, refuting definite existence and non-existence. To speak of existence is attachment; refuting this existence fulfills the above [admonition] not to cling. To say non-existence is false; refuting this non-existence fulfills the above prohibition. Second, from "Apart from these" below reveals the correct principle: "Apart from these two things, one should definitely say it is both existent and non-existent" briefly reveals the principle. From "Why?" below is the explanation. First it explains the meaning of existence: the initial question, subsequent analysis, and concluding summary can be known. Afterwards it explains the meaning of non-existence: the initial question and subsequent analysis. Milk being white and curd being yellow is called "difference in color"; milk being sweet and curd being sour is called "difference in taste"; "milk is cold and curd is hot" is called difference in nature; the text briefly omits treating difference in therapeutic efficacy and difference in production. The textual aspects can be known.
