As for the seven of the separate practices, the śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas, and buddhas each have seven persons. As for the seven of the śrāvakas, dividing them by the great stages: external ordinary beings are perpetually submerged; from after the fivefold mental stabilization up to warmth and summit is called having emerged and then submerged; the mental stage of patience and the worldly supreme dharmas are called having emerged and then stayed; from patience regarding suffering onward is called surveying the directions; from the practice of the sakṛdāgāmin onward is called having surveyed and proceeding; after the fruit of the anāgāmin is called having proceeded and then stayed; arhats are called traversing both water and land. The seven persons of the pratyekabuddha are the same as the śrāvaka, differing only in the solitary awakening of the last. As for the seven of the bodhisattva: the icchantika is perpetually submerged; initially studying and generating the mind [of awakening] is called having emerged and then submerged; the wholesome destinies are called staying, because faith is indestructible; the practice lineage surveys the directions; the nature lineage is called having surveyed the directions and proceeding, hence in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra these are called the ten practices; understanding and practice is called having proceeded and again staying; from the first ground upward is traversing both water and land. As for the seven persons of the Buddha: external ordinary beings are perpetually submerged; the wholesome destinies are called having emerged and submerging again; from the lineage nature upward is described as staying; the first ground surveys the directions; from the second ground onward is called having surveyed and proceeding; from the eighth ground upward is called having proceeded and staying; the Tathāgata is called traversing both water and land.
