Those taught within the śrāvaka piṭaka are of two kinds: first, the śrāvaka śrāvaka, and second, the pratyekabuddha śrāvaka. As for the śrāvaka śrāvaka, this person has originally sought the śrāvaka path from before, constantly delighting in contemplating the dharma of the four noble truths and forming a śrāvaka disposition. In their final body, encountering a buddha, the four noble truths are explained to them, and they thereby awaken to the path. Since they originally had a śrāvaka disposition and now also hear the voice [of the Buddha] and thereby awaken to the path, they are therefore called a 'śrāvaka śrāvaka,' as the sūtra states: 'For those who seek to be śrāvakas, the four truths are explained.' Stated on this basis, as for the pratyekabuddha śrāvaka, this person has originally sought the pratyekabuddha path, constantly delighting in contemplating the dharma of the twelve links of dependent origination. In their final body, encountering a buddha, the dharma of the twelve links of dependent origination is explained to them, and they thereby awaken to the path. Having originally a pratyekabuddha disposition, they hear the voice [of the Buddha] in their final body and awaken to the path; therefore they are called a 'pratyekabuddha śrāvaka,' as the sūtra states: 'For those who seek to be pratyekabuddhas, the twelve links of dependent origination are explained.' Discussing it on this ground, although these two are distinct, they equally seek the lesser dharma and rely equally on teaching and place; therefore, that which is spoken for these two persons is the śrāvaka piṭaka.
