Second, Kāśyapa respectfully consents, asking, 'What are they?' The Tathāgata explains for him, in which there are three clauses: first, it clarifies that as a cause and condition for a bodhisattva to break the precepts, causing other sentient beings to accept and uphold this sūtra and expound it extensively for people without retrogressing from bodhi, at that time they may be broken; saying 'for the sake of the sūtra one may break the precepts' reveals the sūtra's excellence, and also wishes to cause people to break precepts to propagate the sūtra; second, from 'the bodhisattva at that time should think' downward instructs in generating the intention to break them; third, from 'for this cause' downward concludes that they may be broken. These two pairs are finished.
