From "The two commentaries" onward, [the text treats] the origins of the commentary, divided into two: first, generally presenting the two reasons, in two [parts]: first, the distant reason for composing the commentary, in two [parts]: first, receiving the sūtra at Shejing [Temple]. "Origin" means: "conditions" (yuán) refers to causes and reasons, while "arising" (qǐ) refers to coming into being. "I" (yú) means oneself. "Childhood years" means tender youth. "Shejing" is the name of a temple, located in Zhang'an, which refers to Dharma Master Huizheng. The biography states: "When he reached the age of seven, he again became a disciple of the Venerable Zheng." This is fully recorded in the upper fascicle. I once read the Biographies of Eminent Monks and saw that among the eminent virtuous ones of ancient times, rarely was there one who did not lecture on or recite this sūtra. Truly, this was the Dharma King's testament and the compassionate father's final injunction; as ministers and as sons, by principle it should be respectfully upheld. In recent times, those who lecture on or recite it are utterly absent; that the Dharma is gradually declining is proven here. May those of identical views and shared practice exert their efforts to circulate it, retying the broken cords of the social order and raising up anew the fallen banner—for loyal ministers and filial sons are found precisely in this.
