Second, from "Formerly, wrapping provisions" downward, is the general conclusion that both were lost. "Wrapping provisions to travel to the southeast" refers to the preceding passage about carrying the book-box to Tiantai and beyond. Entering mountains and traversing valleys, going back and forth across Yang and Yue, it was far more than a thousand li. The Wenxuan says, "Wrapping provisions for ten thousand li." Deng is a long-handled bamboo hat. The Shiji states that Yu Qing put on straw sandals and carried a bamboo hat to persuade King Xiaocheng of Zhao; at their first meeting he was granted a hundred yi of gold, and after a second persuasion he was appointed Senior Minister. "Carrying guilt to travel to the northwest" refers to the passage below about being slandered again. As for the "three slanders," all three sons of Duke Xian of Jin were slandered by Lady Li, hence the phrase "three slanders"; the commentary's author compares himself to this. The three sons were Crown Prince Shensheng, Chong'er, and Yiwu. The fifth book of the Zuo zhuan says: "Earlier, Duke Xian of Jin wished to make Lady Li his consort. He divined by tortoise-shell, which was inauspicious; he divined by milfoil, which was auspicious. The Duke said: 'I will follow the milfoil.' The diviner said: 'The milfoil is short-sighted and the tortoise farsighted; it is better to follow the farsighted.' He did not listen, and established her. She gave birth to Xiqi, and her younger sister gave birth to Zhuozi. When Xiqi was about to be made heir, she had already formed a plot with the senior grand masters. Lady Li said to the Crown Prince: 'The Lord dreamt of Qi Jiang; you must urgently sacrifice to her.' The Crown Prince sacrificed at Quwo and returned the sacrificial meat to the Duke. The Duke was hunting, so Lady Li placed it in the palace. After six days the Duke arrived, and she poisoned it before presenting it. The Duke offered it to the ground, and the ground swelled up; he gave it to a dog, and the dog died; he gave it to a palace attendant, and the attendant also died. Lady Li wept and said: 'The banditry comes from the Crown Prince.' The Crown Prince fled to Xincheng. The Duke executed his tutor, Du Yuankuan. Someone said to the Crown Prince: 'If you plead your case, the Lord will surely clear you.' The Crown Prince said: 'Without Lady Li, the Lord cannot rest in peace nor eat his fill. If I plead my case, Lady Li will surely be found guilty. The Lord is old, and I would find no joy in that.' The person said: 'Will you not flee?' The Crown Prince said: 'The Lord has not truly examined the guilt; fleeing with such a name upon me, who would take me in?' On the wushen day of the twelfth month, he hanged himself at Xincheng. Lady Li then slandered the two princes, saying: 'They both knew of it.' Chong'er fled to Pu, and Yiwu fled to Qu." Speaking of "southeast and northwest": with the imperial capital at the center, Yang and Yue lie to the southeast, while You and Ji lie to the northwest. "Whether listening or contemplating," etc.: earlier, hoping to hear this scripture, he carried a bamboo hat to the southeast, but because of the eight hindrances he lost the hearing of it; later, wishing to contemplate his faults for the rest of his life, driven by galloping about the northwest, he lost his contemplation due to the five hardships. Therefore it is said: "both paths were lost."
