Next, from "The Great Awakened One" onward is the notification. The word "notification" (gao) means to announce: first it announces to cause them to sever doubts, and next it announces to cause them to raise questions. The Great Awakened One of universal knowledge can sever the former doubts; the kindness and compassion of the four equalities will surely grant the later questions. When the later questions [are raised], then the path of teaching flows freely and nirvāṇa's giving is obtained; when doubts are severed, then the false is abandoned and the real obtained, and the new "i" character is then revealed. The great voice universally notifying is the prelude to setting forth the teaching—this meaning is clear. Previously, it fully praised the three titles; now it only announces [as] the Great Awakened One. The Great Awakened One is precisely the All-Knowing One (sarvajña). That the master is the ruler and the father is clear, so words need not be multiplied. Furthermore, Tathāgata is the first title, and Great Awakened One is the later title. Praising the first and notifying with the latter mutually invoke one side, and the meaning is comprehensive. If we distinguish according to the former, we should clarify the four meanings section by section; since the point is understood, it is naturally clear, so it is not repeated.
