The characteristics of the fourth refuge also comprise three: first, the characteristic of realization; second, the characteristic of stage; third, the characteristic of practice. Although this is not in the same sequence as before, the three meanings are identical. The first passage's saying "severing all afflictions" means slaying both thieves of universal and distinct [delusion], clarifying that their cause has perished. "Casting off the heavy burden" means not receiving the two types of birth, fragmented and transformative, clarifying that their fruit is eliminated. "Attaining one's own welfare" means attaining what the Buddha attains. "Having accomplished what was to be done" means reaching the tenth stage. With learning and practice completed to the utmost, this is called "worthy of offerings." Abiding in the tenth stage determines the stage and reveals its locus. Third, from "attaining unfettered wisdom" downward is the characteristic of practice. Attaining unfettered wisdom is the characteristic of self-practice. Entering in accordance with what is wished is the characteristic of the practice of transforming others. Becoming a buddha as soon as one desires to conclude the unfettered wisdom.
