From 'Furthermore, World-Honoured One' downward, the third is deducing the Buddha's realization of fruition: possessing complete physical strength, how could he possibly have illness? This again has two [parts]: first, clarifying physical strength; next, clarifying intellectual strength. In the first, on physical strength, it broadly cites various strengths for comparison. As for 'elephants such as utpala', this elephant is blue in color. Puṇḍarīka is red in color. The second explanation says that when the elephant walks, there are flowers under its feet like the utpala, and it is named accordingly. The [story of] Prince Sudāna says: 'The white elephant that walks upon lotus blossoms', which is proof of this. Another says: when thunder rumbles, utpala flowers grow upon its tusks, and so it is named from this. The rest are by analogy. *Bhakataya* (bhaktendu / bhati?) translates here as 'firm'. Nārāyaṇa translates here as 'adamantine'.
