From "the bodhisattva at that time" onward is the second part, explaining the fruition of meditation. Here, it explains the simultaneous cultivation of meditation and wisdom cultivated by those who are doubly liberated; hence it says that having cultivated this contemplation, one attains the four foundations of mindfulness. The foundations of mindfulness can sever defilements and enter the stages, and the stage is precisely the stage of forbearance. The text has a designation and an explanation. Formerly it was said: the fifth stage, where the dhyānapāramitā is fully developed, is the stage of forbearance. We now clarify that this is not so. If one discusses the fruition of meditation separately according to the distinct and round [teachings], it has already been explained as above; if round and distinct are discussed together, it is still the first stage. Forbearing from greed and desire up to hunger and thirst is forbearance of dharmas; forbearing from mosquitoes and gadflies up to beatings is forbearance of sentient beings. Physical and mental suffering and distress is the overall conclusion.
