From "I, at a past time" below, this is the sixteenth debate, on whether the five precepts and eight precepts are taken in full or not taken in full. For the Sarvāstivādins, one attains them only if taken in full; in the *Tattvasiddhi-śāstra*, one attains them even if not in full. As the *Upāsaka-śīla Sūtra* says: "If one directly receives the three refuges without yet receiving a single precept, one is called a fractional upāsaka. Likewise, there are the two-fraction, multi-fraction, and full-fraction." Furthermore, masters have explained: "One takes all five together, but upholding only one or two is called one-fraction or two-fraction" (and so forth). The text has two parts: first clarifying that the five precepts are not in full, and next clarifying that the eight precepts are in full; they are merely presented reciprocally.
