From "At that time the great physician" onwards is the second, explaining the conditions of good people, which also has two parts: first, the elder brother; second, the father. The first has four parts: first, Jīvaka questions him; second, the king answers; third, exhorting him to go to the Buddha's place; fourth, shame prevents him from complying. Regarding the first text: Jīvaka is translated here as "Firm Life" (guhuo). When the boy was born, he held a medicine pouch in one hand and a needle case in the other. In the past he had vowed to be a physician, being skilled at curing others; his title was established based on his virtue and translated as "Firm Life"; he was the son of Āmrapālī.
