問：何故釋迦剎帝利姓，彌勒菩薩婆羅門種？答：釋迦出自惡時，眾樂於富貴；彌勒出自好時，眾生樂於淨行。由斯二佛生姓不同。

Question: Why was Śākyamuni of the kṣatriya caste, while Bodhisattva Maitreya is of the brāhmaṇa lineage? Answer: Śākyamuni appeared in an evil time, when the multitudes took pleasure in wealth and nobility; Maitreya will appear in an auspicious time, when sentient beings take pleasure in pure conduct. It is because of this that the castes into which the two Buddhas were born differ.
