Question: When the Buddhas expound the Dharma, their primary purpose is to eliminate grasping at a self. Why do they not say "No-self heard," but instead say "I heard"? Answer: Due to four meanings, it only says "I heard": First, because speech is easy; if one said "no-self," who would be known to be designated by this? Second, to accord with the world. Third, to eliminate the fear of no-self; if one says "no-self," for whose sake would one cultivate and learn? Fourth, because there are causes, effects, activities, and so forth of self and other, defiled and pure, it is therefore called "I".
