The Commentary says: This explains the planting of causes. 'Candana' is sandalwood incense, its colour extending to red and white. 'Maṇi' is the wish-fulfilling jewel, which is what the devas wear, resembling the colour of red and white sandalwood. The divine wish-fulfilling jewel is the divine jewel in the jewelled crown worn on the head of a deva. Bestowing it indicates that when the future fruit arises, whatever is sought will all be attained, and because the wisdom of all modes is completely bright, one attains what is wished. Removing the jewelled crown accords with reverence, and because receiving the prophecy of Buddhahood is the most honoured. The devas all removed them, hence it says 'each'. 'Kneeling long' means both knees touching the ground while keeping the body upright, because the posture of reverence is complete, and it represents cultivating concentration and wisdom constantly without interruption. 'Joining palms' is an appearance of devout reverence, representing the mind merging with the object and realizing wisdom in accord with principle. The above explains cultivating the bodily karma as a cause. Below, generating vows is the verbal karma as a cause. That which can give rise to both is the mental karma as a cause, because the three wheels are fully present.
