贊曰：第二、明發願。此起願因。慈氏廣以智悲運蒼生而居彼岸，情懷廣大，居因位而號眾生。摩訶薩埵云大有情，以義解之名大心眾生。

The Commentary says: Second, directly explaining the generation of the vow. This is the cause for generating the vow. Maitreya, broadly employing wisdom and compassion, transports living beings to dwell on the other shore; his sentiments are vast and great, and dwelling in the causal stage he is titled 'sentient being'. *Mahāsattva* means 'great sentient being'; interpreting it according to its meaning, he is called a 'great-minded sentient being'.
