Question: The original intent of all preaching of the Dharma is to eliminate grasping to a self. Why does one not say 'Without a self have [I] heard'? Answer: There are four reasons for only stating 'what I have heard'. First, because it makes speech easy: if one said 'without a self', it would not be understood whom it indicates. Second, to conform to the world: the Tathāgata's speech is not incorrect, because sentient beings collectively establish valid conventions. Third, to eliminate fear of selflessness: if one said 'without a self', for whose sake would one cultivate and learn? Fourth, because there are defiled and pure causes, effects, and actions of oneself and others: if one said 'without a self', one could not express these distinctions.
