問：頓漸其義云何？答：二說。一云：《上生經》頓教攝，以不思議諸陀羅尼、首楞嚴定等，非二乘所得故。一云：此經漸教攝，以人天八部願生彼天故。今且後說為勝，以諸比丘等皆蒙化益故。餘二經義亦可同也。

Question: What is their meaning regarding sudden and gradual? Answer: There are two explanations. One says: The Ascent Sūtra is subsumed under the sudden teaching, because the inconceivable dhāraṇīs, the śūraṅgamasamādhi, and the like are not attainable by the two vehicles. Another says: this sūtra is subsumed under the gradual teaching, because humans, devas, and the eight classes of beings vow to be born in that heaven. For now, the latter explanation is superior, because the bhikṣus and others all receive the benefit of conversion. The meaning of the other two sūtras may be regarded similarly.
