Third, regarding the priority and posteriority of generating the mind: Question: Between Śākyamuni and Maitreya, who generated the mind first? Answer: Maitreya was first, and Śākyamuni was later. Therefore, the Fozang jing says: 'Forty kalpas after Maitreya generated the mind, Śākyamuni then generated the mind.' Also, the Mile pusa suowen benyuan jing says: 'Maitreya generated the resolution forty-two kalpas before me, and I generated the resolution for the path thereafter. In this Bhadrakalpa, by great energetic striving, I surpassed [him by] nine kalpas to attain right awakening.' Furthermore, the Fo benxing jing says: 'In the past there was a Tathāgata named Good Thought; the Bodhisattva Maitreya initially generated the mind in the presence of that Buddha. The Bodhisattva Maitreya generated the bodhicitta more than forty kalpas before me, and after that I generated the mind for the path. In the past there was a Buddha named Revealing the Ocean Banner Tathāgata; in that Buddha's land I was a wheel-turning king named Firm Mountain and first generated the mind.' In all such sūtras, Maitreya generated the mind first and Śākyamuni generated the mind later.
