From the sūtra passage stating, "At that time, in the Tuṣita heaven…" downward is the second [part], answering about purity and defilement. This has two parts: first, extensively detailing the vast magnificence in order to answer regarding purity and defilement; second, concluding with the causes and praising its superiority. In the first part, there are three: first, five hundred million devaputras create the outer palace; next, a great spirit creates the inner Dharma hall; and last, five great spirits adorn the two palaces. This is the first.
The five hundred million devas are emanations of the Bodhisattva, created to adorn it in advance. In terms of actuality, although they fully cultivate the ten virtuous actions and receive heavenly fruition, because their giving is superior, it is specifically spoken of. Regarding "the one-life-remaining bodhisattva," Master Xuanzang says: "In Sanskrit it is *Maitrī*, which here translates as 'Benevolent Practice' (or 'Practitioner of Wisdom'). Also *Medī*, previously translated as Maitreya, are all errors." This Bodhisattva dies in his present life and is born in Tuṣita; after passing through many deaths and rebirths, he is reborn in that heaven, and after a final death he is born among humans and only then attains Buddhahood, which is called 'one life remaining' (ekajātipratibaddha).
