[Kumāra]jīva says: When the mind is pure, the eyes are clear; hence he adduces the mind to verify the eyes. Furthermore, the eyes are the foremost of physical form, and the mind is the root of virtue; intending to praise virtue, he therefore extols his mind. 'Crossed beyond all dhyāna concentrations' explains why it is pure.
[Seng]zhao says: The foremost in form is the eyes, and what governs virtue is the mind; hence the composer marks these two at the head of the hymn. The ocean of dhyāna concentration is deep, broad, and boundless; unless it were the Tathāgata's pure, true mind, none could cross it.
