肇曰：眾生聞苦報則恐畏、聞妙果則歡喜，聞不淨則厭離、聞法相則斷疑。不知一音何演而令歡畏異生，此豈二乘所能共也。

[Seng]zhao says: When sentient beings hear of painful retribution they are terrified, and when they hear of wonderful fruits they rejoice; when they hear of impurity they feel revulsion, and when they hear of the marks of phenomena their doubts are severed. They do not comprehend how a single voice can be so delivered as to cause joy and fear to arise variously—how could this ever be shared by the two vehicles?
