[Seng]zhao says: A land's purity must depend on sentient beings, and sentient beings' purity must rely on the myriad practices; he directly adduces sentient beings to explain the purity of the land. Now he completely adduces the myriad practices to clarify that by which it is pure. When practices are pure then sentient beings are pure; when sentient beings are pure then the buddha-land is pure. This is an inevitable principle that cannot deviate. A land free of crookedness arises from the straightforwardness of the mind; therefore it is said, 'The straightforward mind is the bodhisattva's pure land.' This is speaking of the fruit in terms of the cause, like pointing to gold as food. The 'straightforward mind' means plain and direct without flattery. This mind is the root of the myriad practices, hence it is established at the head of the chapter.
