[Seng]zhao says: When the mind is straightforward, faith is firm; once faith is firm, one can then initiate steps and perform practices. Thus, that which begins the myriad practices is solely the straightforward mind. This chapter explains the stages of practice: the subtle and the manifest cause one another, sufficient to start with the straightforward mind and culminate in the pure land. It is like planting a tiny shoot that grows into a tree of a hundred spans. The straightforward mind plants its sprout, and the manifold practices are accomplished through it; hence it says 'in accordance with.' [Dao]sheng says: Previously it was only explained that each of the manifold practices is a cause for purifying a land, but not how they are attained; hence the sequence of their intention is explained next to elucidate this. 'In this way' refers to the above practices being like the intention below. This means that by relying on the momentum of the straightforward mind, one is naturally able to initiate the manifold practices.
