1.46

[Kumāra]jīva says: Being free from hindrances and entanglements has three aspects: first, upholding the precepts purely so that hindrances and entanglements do not arise; second, severance through the worldly path, which severs but not completely, where their non-arising at that time is also called "freedom"; here, it is attaining the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas, which is freedom through complete extinction. [Seng]zhao says: "Hindrances" are the five hindrances. "Entanglements" are the ten entanglements, or also immeasurable entanglements. When the three karmas of body, speech, and mind are entirely purified, hindrances and entanglements can no longer encumber them.
