肇曰：佛所說經自有義旨分明、盡然易了者應依。亦有應時之經，詭言合道聖意難知，自未了者不可依也。生曰：辨理者為了義經也。雖曰巧辭而無理者，為不了義也。

[Seng]zhao says: Among the sūtras taught by the Buddha, there are naturally those whose intended meaning is distinct and fully expressed, which are easy to understand and should be relied upon. There are also sūtras adapted to the occasion, whose paradoxical words accord with the Way but whose sacred intention is difficult to know; those which one does not yet understand oneself must not be relied upon. [Dao]sheng says: Those that discern the principle are sūtras of definitive meaning. Those that, although phrased with skillful words, lack the ultimate principle, are of provisional meaning.
