10.169

什曰：不付阿難，以其無有神力，不能廣宣，故不付也。維摩非此土菩薩，故不囑也。文殊遊無定方，故不囑。囑彌勒者，以於此成佛故也。佛自以神力宣布，欲成彌勒功業故也。肇曰：不思議經即佛無上菩提之道，其道深遠難可剋成。吾無量劫不惜身命，肉施踰須彌、血施過江海，勤苦積集今始得就，哀彼長迷故垂之竹帛。然群生薄德、魔事熾盛，吾道多難，非汝不弘嗣正之第，所以重囑累之也。

[Kumāra]jīva says: He did not entrust it to Ānanda because [Ānanda] lacked supernatural power and could not proclaim it widely; therefore he did not entrust it [to him]. Vimalakīrti is not a bodhisattva of this land; therefore he did not entrust it [to him]. Mañjuśrī travels without fixed location; therefore he did not entrust it [to him]. The reason he entrusted it to Maitreya is that he will achieve buddhahood here. The Buddha himself, by supernatural power, proclaimed it widely, wishing to accomplish Maitreya's meritorious task. [Seng]zhao says: The Inconceivable Sūtra is indeed the Buddha's path of unexcelled bodhi. Its path is profound and far-reaching, difficult to bring to realization. For immeasurable kalpas I did not begrudge body or life: my gifts of flesh exceeded Mount Sumeru, my gifts of blood surpassed rivers and oceans. Through diligent suffering I accumulated it, and only now is it accomplished. Pitying those long lost in confusion, I thus commit it to bamboo and silk. Yet sentient beings have meager virtue and the workings of Māra flourish; my path encounters many difficulties, and without you it could not be propagated by the one next in succession to the correct [lineage]. This is why he repeatedly entrusted it.
