In the beginning of winter of the renwu year [982], when I had been recalled by imperial edict to gather my family from my post as Right Rectifier of Omissions, Auxiliary in the Academy of Historiography, and Fiscal Commissioner of Jiangnan, I traveled downstream by boat. It was the ninth day of the tenth month when I moored by the side of Hukou. As evening fell, there was a man about fifty years old, whose clothing and appearance were like those of a fisherman, who bowed on the riverbank. He then explained of himself: 'For generations my family has lived on the water (in the south there are those who live on rafts and boats, called "water dwellers"), and I foresee the winds and waters.' From his sleeve he produced a chart of water routes to present to me, and moreover said: 'On the fourteenth day there will surely be a great storm.' This matter is fully recorded in my Account of Anomalies (Yiji). After a few more days, I dreamed by day of a man dressed in black, emerging half-body from the water, who called himself Jiang Rao and demanded the ten fascicles of the Vimalakīrti Sūtra. Upon waking, I marveled at it. On the fourteenth day, just as predicted, a great wind suddenly arose on Digang, and the boat was nearly overturned and sunk several times, barely escaping destruction. This was indeed the day foretold regarding the wind and water, and the one who called himself Jiang Rao in the dream. That my entire family escaped being buried in the bellies of fish—is it not exceedingly fortunate! Upon arriving at the capital, I ordered everywhere to seek and find a ten-fascicle Vimalakīrti Sūtra, but all said there was no such thing. Not many months later, at the residence of a relative, I saw a sūtra box, opened and inspected it, and found it was precisely one copy of the Vimalakīrti Sūtra in ten fascicles. How magnificent is the supreme excellence of these golden texts and jade verses, and the protection of the ocean storehouse and dragon palace! How manifest, how manifest is the power of their merit! That those who are foolish and benighted cannot bring forth faith is deeply lamentable. I thereupon selected craftsmen to carve the printing blocks, my aspiration being to distribute them widely so as to spread them extensively, thereby marking this divine anomaly and directly recording the date and time.
