什曰：上諸方便以施戒攝人，施戒攝人則人感其惠，聞其有疾問疾者眾，問疾者眾則功化弘矣。是以廣現方便，然後處疾也。

[Kumāra]jīva says: The expedients mentioned above gathered people through giving and morality; gathering people through giving and morality led them to feel grateful for his benevolence. Hearing that he was ill, those who came to inquire after his illness were numerous; with many inquiring after his illness, his work of transformation became vast. Thus he broadly manifested upāya, and only then took on illness.
