2.142

[Kumāra]jīva says: In an instant it assumes different colors, and in a moment it changes and perishes. The body is also like this: between the blink of an eye and a breath, there are youth and growth, old age, sickness, death, and alteration. From 'like foam' down to 'like lightning', they all illustrate impermanence. Whether by lack of firmness, by short duration, by unreality, or by dependence on causes and conditions, they clarify the reasons for its impermanence. The four great element similes below illustrate emptiness and non-self.
