[Kumāra]jīva says: This clarifies that it is destroyed by impermanence, and is therefore suffering. From here down, he fully expounds the similes for suffering. Being a calamity is the suffering of illness. From the mound well downward, it broadly illustrates the immeasurable myriad sufferings of birth, old age, sickness, and death. [Seng]zhao says: Though bathed with fragrant waters and clothed in fine garments, if it is genuinely unreal, how could it endure for long?
