[Seng]zhao says: "The Pure Name observed that the householders ought to hear the meaning of emptiness, yet Maudgalyāyana was not skilled in observing people's faculties and guided them with dharmas of existence; hence he incurred reproof." [Dao]sheng says: "Expounding the Dharma originally aims to lead them to value the Dharma, not to eliminate the Dharma. Once they valued it, they adhered with attachment and took pleasure in the small. Those who take pleasure in the small focus exclusively on desiring to be free from sickness, but this contradicts their great fundamental basis. Those who adhere with attachment run contrary to the principle of the Dharma; running contrary indeed arises from their emotional inclinations. Yet the one expounding the Dharma might incur the suspicion of having dull faculties, and also displayed the manifest trace of not expounding in accordance with the Dharma. White robes are not the conduct for attaining the Way; fortunately, one need not expound the principle of abandoning the mundane so as to harm their fundamental basis. Householders harbour greed and attachment; one must not cause them to see the Dharma as something to be valued so as to shift their attachment. Therefore he says: 'In expounding the Dharma for white-robed householders, it should not be done as the benevolent one has expounded it.'"
